Travis Branam, VOCO's founder and director

Travis Branam
VOCO Founder & Director

Hi!

I’m gonna try and do this in a way that I hope feels less like an obituary and more like a window into who I am. The more you read, the more you’ll learn. Thanks for being curious about me!

“Travis is an encourager, purposefully speaking truth into the lives of young artists.”

--Emma Bechler, VOCO Graduate and composer of The Revival, VOCO’s anthem

  • -I graduated from Abilene Christian University with a Bachelor’s in Music Education, a wonderful wife, and some of the greatest friends a guy could ask for.

-From 2005 to 2008, I taught music at East Ward Elementary School, a Title I school in Killeen, Texas. One of my former students recently won the golden buzzer on America’s Got Talent.

-In 2008, my wife and I moved to Denver when I took a job with the Colorado Children’s Chorale. I directed their beginner-level choir, assisting with all other choirs, and toured worldwide with their Tour Choir.

-In 2017, I left the Chorale and started Vocal Coalition. Since heading out on my own, I’ve learned to do admin work, fundraise, and become an organizational leadership nerd.

-I’ve presented about VOCO at Chorus America, the Colorado Music Educators Association, the Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented, and TEDxMileHigh.

-In 2018, I joined The HadaNou Collective (HNC), a Colorado-based group of equity-minded nonprofit leaders. HNC has been instrumental to my development as a leader, and I could not be more thankful for the ways they’ve helped me and VOCO grow.

-For eight years, I was also an Assistant Conductor for the Colorado Symphony Chorus. I led sectionals, ran rehearsals if The Maestro was away, and took the lead in preparing the Chorus for crowd-pleasing projects like Too Hot to Handel and The Flaming Lips at Red Rocks.

-In May 2021, I left the Symphony Chorus to join the Denver Children's Choir. I miss a lot about the Symphony Chorus, but I’m loving conducting for the DCC!

-As a choir conductor I’d say I’m passionate, innovative, inspirational, clear, heart-forward, and someone who prioritizes people over music.

-I love directing honor choirs. If you’re looking for someone to direct one of yours, please email me ASAP!

  • -Family is a really big deal to me, and I try to treat my family, friends, colleagues and students like family.

-I live in Arvada, CO with my wife Emily and our treat-obsessed dog Olive. We love being close to the foothills without being too far from Denver.

-I have two amazing parents, three spectacular sisters, two wonderful brothers-in-law, one awesome nephew, and one adorable niece. All of them except me live in the Los Angeles area, not far from where we grew up. I have a depth of gratitude for my family that’s often causes me to tear up when I think about what they mean to me. I try to visit as often as I can, and wish I could visit more often.

-No matter how long I live in Colorado, I’ll always love the ocean more than the mountains and the Dodgers more than the Rockies.

-I’m an Enneagram 4, which means that among other things, I care a lot about authenticity. I invest in reciprocal relationships with people who pursue their own healing and who are willing to be accountable for their mistakes.

    - I also love classic rock, hot tubs, hot springs, vanilla hazelnut coffee, road trips, hiking, eating out, The Wonder Years, This Is Us, James Taylor, WandaVision, giving and receiving gifts, Johannes Brahms, In-N-Out, camping with friends, the moon, water, ping-pong, creativity, innovation, Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, people who face their fears, deep conversations, walks on the beach, Colorado music, The Avett Brothers, and hugs.

“Travis has a love for children and music that is unrivaled. His dedication to the arts and to their preservation through community has positively affected my life, my children, my music, and our city.”
